What is the ELDT Hazmat Endorsement Course?

The Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) Hazardous Materials (H) Endorsement Course is a federally required in-person training for commercial drivers who want to obtain a Hazmat (H) endorsement on their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). This training is mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and has been required since February 7, 2022.

Who Needs This Course?

Any driver applying for a Hazmat (H) endorsement for the first time must complete this ELDT course before taking the Hazmat knowledge test at their local DMV.

What Does the Course Cover?

This in-person training covers key topics related to the safe transportation of hazardous materials, including:

  • Hazardous materials regulations (HMR).
  • Proper handling, loading, and unloading procedures.
  • Hazmat classification and packaging requirements.
  • Placarding and labeling regulations.
  • Safety and security measures.
  • Emergency response procedures.

How Does It Work?

  1. Attend the ELDT Hazmat Course in Person – The course is theory-based and does not require behind-the-wheel training.
  2. Training Provider Submits Certification – After successful completion, the training provider submits your completion record to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR).
  3. Take the Hazmat Knowledge Test – Once your ELDT certification is recorded, you can take the Hazmat endorsement test at your state’s DMV.
  4. Pass a TSA Background Check – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requires a security screening before granting the endorsement.

Why is This Course Important?

  • Compliance with Federal Law – The ELDT requirement ensures that all new Hazmat drivers meet standardized safety training.
  • Improved Safety & Knowledge – Helps drivers understand how to handle hazardous materials safely and in accordance with federal regulations.
  • Career Growth – A Hazmat endorsement can open new job opportunities and increase earning potential.
